Unseen Battles, Unspoken Pain: Why PTSD Awareness Matters More Than Ever

At Empowering Change, we walk alongside individuals and families every single day who are facing overwhelming challenges. Many are without homes, without safety, and often without a voice. What we’ve come to understand is that trauma is a silent partner in much of the homelessness we see—and PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is far more common than most people realize.
While there may be a national day for PTSD awareness, the truth is: this battle is fought every day, in the hearts and minds of those we serve. That’s why we’re proud to lift up and honor the life-changing work being done by one of our sister organizations: Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities (UGMTC).
They, like us, believe that no one ends up on the streets by choice. Behind every tent, shelter bed, or hungry face is often a story of pain—trauma from childhood abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, or military combat. These experiences don’t just go away. They change how a person sees the world… and how they see themselves.
PTSD is not always visible. It doesn’t announce itself loudly. But it shows up in sleepless nights, panic attacks, isolation, and the deep-rooted feeling of being unsafe—even when nothing seems immediately threatening.
At UGMTC, they are doing the sacred work of addressing these wounds with grace, truth, and hope.
Through Christ-centered care, counseling, mental health support, and the power of community, they are walking with people through the process of healing. They don’t just offer beds or meals. They offer restoration.
At Empowering Change, we are continually reminded that healing takes time—and it takes people. It takes organizations willing to see beyond the surface, to reach deeper, to believe that no matter how broken someone feels, God is still in the business of mending hearts and rebuilding lives.
We know the connection between PTSD and homelessness is real. We see it in rural communities and urban streets alike. And it’s why we continue to invest in rescue, recovery, trauma-informed outreach, and faith-based compassion in every kit we hand out, every food box we deliver, and every conversation we have with someone who's struggling to hold on.

📲 If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 to reach a trained crisis counselor who is ready to help, listen, and support.
Let’s not wait for a single day to raise awareness. Let’s live it. Speak it. Share it. Because the more we understand trauma, the more we can offer hope. And the more we believe in healing, the more lives will be changed.
Together, we can break the cycle.
With compassion and conviction,
